Ook buiten werktijd blijven we leren: onze developers op J-Fall  • Enlite

Last November, a number of our colleagues exchanged their familiar workplace for the conference center in Ede. Not for a client project or mandatory training, but on their own initiative: they visited J-Fall Netherlands' largest Java conference.

What is J-Fall?

J-Fall is the largest Java conference in the Netherlands and is attended every year by hundreds to thousands of developers, architects and IT professionals. The program consists of a full day of talks and sessions on topics such as Java, cloud, software architecture, DevOps, security, testing and new technology developments. Speakers are often international experts who share their knowledge and practical experience. Visitors can create their own day by choosing from a variety of sessions, from technical deep-dives to broader sessions on collaboration, architecture and trends in IT. Beyond content, J-Fall is also a meeting place: developers from across the country come together to exchange experiences, get ideas and take inspiration back to their own workplace.

The value of J-Fall to our colleagues

Albert Dijkstra, software developer at Enlite: “I find it especially interesting to follow talks about new technologies. For example, it is valuable to see what the latest versions of Java or Spring Boot look like. That way, even before you start working with a new version, you have a good idea of what has changed.

In addition, I found a talk on optimizing data processing very fascinating. There someone showed how he managed to reduce a processing that used to take five minutes to about two seconds. You learn how others look at problems, and that inspires me to delve further into them at home. J-Fall is thus a good opportunity to brush up on your basic knowledge and to find out how people from the community deal with problems. ”

Michaël van der Veen, software developer at Enlite: “It was a really fun and informative day. You have the chance to visit talks in different halls, but you can also gain a lot of connections within the development community. This time I especially went to see the talk by Roald Nefs from Warpnet attend, on automotive hacking.

That talk raised my awareness around security in programming because it showed how easy it is to build something, but also how easy it is sometimes to break that same system again.”

What do we take back?

Albert and Michaël's stories clearly show why J-Fall is so valuable: not only because of the technical knowledge, but also because of the new perspectives, inspiration and conversations with peers. Our colleagues return with fresh ideas, practical insights and a renewed motivation to do their work even better. What makes this extra special is that they come here out of their own interest. Not because they have to, but because they are curious, want to keep developing and enjoy their profession. This commitment is reflected in the quality of their work, in the cooperation within teams and in the solutions they build for our customers.
